Zaha Hadid Architects wants to build a football stadium for the Forest Green Rovers team in Stroud in England. It is the first football team in the world to be completely vegan.
The model from which the zero-impact stadium of the Forest Green Rovers will be inspired could not be, at least ideally, that of the Allianz Riviera in Nice, an environmentally friendly facility strongly desired by the former mayor Christian Estrosi and inaugurated in 2013. But where the architect Jean-Michel Wilmott for the French stadium had staked everything on green technologies and recyclable materials, those of Zaha Hadidi Architects want to do even more, aiming for a facility built almost entirely in wood. It will be called Eco Park Stadium, a name for a program.
To minimize the visual impact of the Eco Park Stadium, however, the roof will be covered with a transparent membrane: in addition to softening the structure, this will minimize the presence of annoying shadows on the playing field. «With Eco Park» explained Dale Vince, president of Forest Green Rovers, «we started the project on a completely empty sheet of paper, and we will go further than anyone else has done so far, to really have the stadium of greenest football in the world ».
It is made entirely with sustainable laminated wood from the area; as a building material laminated wood is highly durable, safe and minimizes embodied carbon. The new stadium aims to be carbon neutral or carbon negative with renewable energy supply on site, demonstrating that sustainable architecture can be dynamic and beautiful. Inside it will host 5000 spectators and the space can be expanded to accommodate 10,000 spectators.
In addition to the stadium, other sports facilities, a green technology park dedicated to business, offices, some restaurants, a nature reserve and an efficient public transport service will complete the entire work. Overall, the entire project is expected to cost around £ 100 million.
